Setting Up A Home Business Web Site
Allow me introduce myself. My name is Laura Childs and my main home business since 1995 has been to create websites and turn them into income streams – for myself and for others.
My personal history is based in desktop publishing (from the late ’80s’), which naturally developed into website design, production management, courseware editor, and a code trouble-shooter. But don’t let any of that deter you from taking a different route to a similar home based business such as I run these days! You don’t need to have any of those skills to set up a home business web site anymore!
Within the pages of GoodByeCityLife’s Country Living site you’ll find quite a few resources to running your own home based business online. I’m talking legitimate home business here – not some get-rich-quick scams where you have to buy traffic and sign up all your friends and family members.
Helping Others with Their Business Sites
For years I worked for others, at an hourly or per-project sliding scale, creating websites, adding content, and performing search engine optimization for them. It was great work, I had fantastic clients, and could work at any hour I chose. This worked out well because I was a single mother with a young daughter at home. If website design or content management is in your skillset and interest, and you’re not quite ready to take the plunge with your own lucrative internet business, this could be a great alternative to the regular 9-5 routine for you. Web 2.0 and Laura Childs 2.0
As I said above, I used to rely on clients for my income, but once the internet shifted (I’ll explain that in a minute), I fired all my clients and have been living off my own sites now for the past four years.
Most of my clients had been with me for nearly 10 years and had become good friends, but when I discovered I could earn far more from my own home business by focusing my energy and attention on my own interests and setting up more websites to reflect those interests, I had no choice. I could either keep working for others at an hourly rate (and let’s face it, there are only so many hours in a day to work!), or double my income, work on my own business and specialize on marketing those online properties.
Losing my clients took some time and many of them just pretended or ignored my requests to find someone else to do the work. But that’s another story for another day. Right now…let’s talk about you!
You Can Run Your Own Internet Business and Work from Home
Let’s stop talking about me. I merely shared my story so you’d know that when it comes to online business – I know my stuff.
More importantly however, you need to know that how I’m earning a living online, you can as well. If you can’t fathom it, please visit another website – we’re wasting each other’s time.
There are now thousands of websites that will sell you all kinds of books and scripts and software so that you can have an online business and work from home. Millions of pages of bad advice and old advice that no longer works. The owners of those site will have you chasing your tail and wearing out your credit card just trying to make one dollar online…
Don’t get caught in the same trap so many others have been distracted and overwhelmed by. You need current knowledge, a mind for business, and the drive to learn as you earn.
I told you I was going to explain the ‘internet shift’…
The Internet Shift – Web 2.0
A little history lesson on online business cost, first.
Years ago it cost a small fortune to set up and run a website. Now you can do it for less than the cost of a night out for two. That’s what I mean by the Internet Shift.
- It used to cost $35/year to register an online business name.
- It used to cost $100/month to host a website.
- It used to cost oodles per hour to hire a business website designer. Now anyone can do it (and I mean anyone!)
quickly and efficiently without hourly webmaster or designer fees.
Big shift, right?
That’s not all Web 2.0 has done.
Definition: Web 2.0. A term describing the new face of the world wide web. More surfers, faster connections, an increase in technological advances. Web 2.0 has also changed the way people use the web.
With Web 2.0 upon us, it’s no surprise that there are so many people running a home based business online. That is, those that are in ‘the know’ about how easy and affordable it has become.
Before we go a step further, please help me to help you in the most efficient manner, by choosing the next article that’s right for your current home based business situation.
