How to Start Your Own Internet Business
Starting an internet business does not need to be difficult or time consuming. You can start up any new business on the internet in less than a day – but I don’t suggest it – better to spend some time researching your idea first, or testing the waters by freelancing.
How to Start an Online Internet Business – One Way
I’ve spoken to quite a number of successful internet entrepreneurs over the years. When asked how they got started the response most often received was that they first started freelancing.
When you’re freelancing (no matter what the work involves) if your work is timely and professional your business will grow without much effort – all based on repeat customers and word of mouth referrals.
As you grow busier your online business will grow up around you. And, at that point, you can refocus your time and energy to grow your business – not just to work for others.
Starting an Online Business – 2nd Perspective
The second most common response from online business owners was that they had started with one website, learned the ropes of marketing, traffic, sales and promotion, then kept applying their new knowledge across multiple websites. And you can do this as well!
Internet businesses are cheaper than you could ever imagine and they are a great set of training wheels for the new work at home entrepreneur. A few years ago growing a business this way was both pricey and time consuming, but today you can start an internet business for less than $20 and a few hours of your time. What Type of Internet Business to Start?
There is a large variety of online businesses that are succeeding right now – most of them are working at home.
Which one is right for you? My hope is that after you’ve read the content I’ve left here for you that you’ll have a better understanding of:
- the varying types of online businesses to start,
- the types to stay away from,
- and which type will suit your personality, working style and level of dedication best.
Sadly, as many good business models there are to follow, there are equally as many scams that try to part you with your money. My job is to make sure you don’t get taken.
Pyramid Payouts
Pyramid schemes online are the same as pyramid schemes offline. However a pyramid styled chart looks little different than any other corporate organizational chart – only that in pyramid schemes you are paid to ’sell’ the ‘opportunity’ – which is illegal in the United States and Canada.
I’m not trying to make enemies here, but let’s just put it on the table and be honest okay?
These types of online businesses require a lot of work, determination, time, etc. Perhaps more-so than the average 9-5er looking for a little online business cash on the side has to give. Not to mention the work is routine and repetitive, which for many people is very discouraging – after all a business and our work takes up a large part of our lives. Do we want it to be dull and repetitive? No way!
I tend to stay away from these programs, they’ve worked for some, but never for me or anyone I know. (My personal opinion is that the few people that ‘get rich’ off these programs are the ones that founded the program to start with. The rest of us just follow along and fund the originators. Of course, that’s my opinion only.)
At the end of the day, when I find something that sounds too good to be true…you’ve heard it before…"if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
Which Internet Business Will Work for You?
What works online is very close to what works offline. A lot has to do with you personally – your habits, interests and determination.
A Product or Service Based Business?
Should you sell a product or offer a service? Decide what you want to sell or offer, then set out to tell the world about it via a website (my 5 step approach to start a website business). Don’t tell yourself you can’t do it, if you are passionate about something, you will succeed.
Best Online Businesses to Start
The buzzword online today is making money in niche markets (small, easily defined and tightly focused groups of people that share an interest). If you can find a niche to sell to and they respond favorably, "BAM!" you are a winner in the online business world and making money at home.
But how will you find a niche market and know whether they will be interested in the product you place online for them?

You research, that’s how! This is one of the most time consuming, frustrating and sometimes boring tasks to perform for starting an online business. However once you start making money in your business, research starts to become fun! Why? Because every bit of research you perform brings you closer to your market and increases your income.
