Country Signs for Your Farm or Ranch

So many people get this wrong - and I did too! - so I thought I'd put this page up for you if you're searching for a custom country sign for your farm, barn or driveway.

The information shared below is purposely for custom country sign work you may do yourself or contract out. These are high-end signs for the discriminating taste or profitable family farm. If this isn't what you're looking for you might be interested in the primitive signs - they can go in or out of the house and are a lot less expensive (however, if 'out of the house' they won't last as long as what I'm about to describe below).

Exterior Country Signs

If you're hiring a painter to make you a farm sign (by the way these make fantastic gifts) the first thing you'll want to discuss with your painter is the materials they plan on using. This consideration is first and foremost before design, lettering or images to be used are even discussed.

If you want your sign to last more than 2 years in the weather you don't want a wood sign or a painted plywood. It doesn't matter how well these are sealed, water will work it's way into your sign and ruin it.

Only use industrial signboard (available for about $60-80 for an 8' x 5' sheet). Only use high quality exterior oils and ensure that all holes created to hang your sign are well sealed with a few dabs of silicone.

Armed with this knowledge and these standards (settle for anything less and your money will be wasted), you can now begin to discuss your color, type face and image preferences with your farm sign painter.

Custom Country Sign Painter

I do paint a number of farm signs on industrial road sign board (a few are displayed below) but due to the artistic level required for these country signs, the expensive materials used, shipping costs from my home and the love and attention I pour into each country sign, my fees are out of most people's price ranges.

I get a lot of people asking for quotes so here's a few examples of my work, the costs involved, and the time each sign requires.

If this work is out of your price range I always suggest to take the knowledge above (regarding materials used for farm signs) to a local artist or sign shop in your neighborhood and secure a second quote - generally they are not too far off from my own, considering shipping costs are not an issue from a local sign painter.

The farm sign above is 50" x 30".

You'll have to excuse my cheap camera...the sign is on an angle and a lot of fine detail has been missed. There was no deterioration after 4 years in the harsh Canadian climate - until (as I've since heard) it was kicked down.

Country Sign Specifics

The materials used in this farm sign ran me over $120, required 3 hours of custom design work on my computer, and over 15 hours to paint (not including drying time). It was a labor of love and we used one of the farms cows as our model. Thankfully we did not have to ship the sign as it weighed over 40 lbs, but it will last for 10 or more years at the end of his driveway. The sign is valued at $2,000.

Now that you've read that, if you still want to send me an email:

  • with your farm logo

  • sign idea

  • photo of your animal

  • colors desired

  • approximate size of the finished sign

I will send you back a quote.

Country Signs Made In The USA

If you'd like to order a USA-made product let me know where you live when you email.

I have many sign painting friends in the United States and I'll send you a personal recommendation. If you've got a special message or custom artwork needed on a sign, send that info along as well.

All farm signs are painted on industrial sign board, to your specifications and color selection. Signs are painted in oils with a final tough clear coat finish. These signs are expected to last more than 10 years in all weather conditions when posted correctly.

Primitive Country Signs

Here we have a different 'feel', a little more 'country'.

The McPherson's wanted a primitive country sign - to look as though it was found under layers of old hay in the barn.

The farm in question has a bit of everything, beef cattle, chickens, goats, a donkey named Holly (she was a Christmas gift) - but they specialize in lamb.

Mrs. McPherson had wanted a donkey for a long time but donkeys are hard to find around here.

Mr. McPherson went for a Christmas morning walk (to a friend's barn where he'd hidden Holly for over a week) and walked Holly the donkey back down his own driveway...the kids were on watch and they directed their mother to the picture window right before her beloved husband arrived with Holly in a red Christmas bow!

Here's a closer shot of the painted country version of Holly on the sign...again, not a very good camera...
