Personal Stories About Moving To and Living in, the Country - Laura Childs

in Farm Land

I grew up in a small town - Charlton City, Massachusetts - population 230, and I loved the country life!

However, at thirteen I was exposed to the other side of the fence when we moved to downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There I resided for 17 years and thought I'd never leave the excitement and glamour that only a big city could offer.

Our leave of Toronto was a result of my having a child. I wanted to give her all the rich and rewarding experiences I'd lived in my youth. We said "Goodbye City Life" and now enjoy a busy, happy country existence.

My daughter Veronica has been schooled in the public school system with class sizes less than 25, accelerated through grades, home schooled (and is now a part time home schooling student), raised within the confines of a diversely talented church community, and attends summer camps with her lifelong friends.

Veronica has competed and sung in local singing contests, rides horses and trains dogs at my side, cares for our farm animals and gardens with me. And at 7 years old she could bake a berry pie that rivaled some of the best baking from many of the local senior ladies.

She's also an avid reader, enjoys a variety of music and is highly skilled on both the MAC and PC computers. If she's missing out on something from living in this sheltered community I'd be surprised to find out what. We shop, dine and take in monthly entertainment in the city so she can experience both worlds.

As for my experience with living in the country, I can only say that I am no expert. There are a few areas of this life that I've worked and studied hard at - took my knocks and losses along the way and am happy to share those experiences with others on this website.

For the most part, I learn as I go. With my panel of pros and resources behind me, and with my insatiable thirst for knowledge, you'll often find me here in the throes of assembling this information database for rural success.

As a firm believer in community, and a strong supporter of any collaborative work, I invite you to write me, via post or email, expressing your interests or views on any country living topic.
