Happy Country GirlsSpending time with your child (in my case daughter) during summer months can be just as difficult to do as during the regular school year.

Actually for us, it’s harder. Veronica has been an off and on homeschooler over the years – which means I see her more often in the fall and winter than I do in the summer.

Summer is filled with a fun, local Christian camp. Both day camp and overnight camp, taking special road trips with friends and other family members, days at the mud hole 4×4ing, entire days at the lake swimming, and whatever else she gets called to participate in.

However, we’ve been practicing lately for an upcoming children’s performance in the local parks – I’m the master of ceremonies and Veronica is the ‘Guiseppe-in-the-Box’ as well as the ‘Honking Ugly Spider’. For that we have to practice together quite a bit, and it’s always a laugh.

Last weekend she said to me “Mom if I ever have to move away for my career or university will you move with me?” I just about cried. This may be a normal question for any other mother to hear but for the mom who has to work at mothering, for the mom with a heart that I was sure was two sizes too small, the question was a statement of love that touched my soul.

At nearly 13, she loves her momma. At nearly 13, she still tells me her secrets. At nearly 13, she’ll still sit on my lap and brings me tea, and oh yes, borrows my makeup!

We have made it. Now we just need to hold it, hold it till we get through all the teenage years!
