Home School Website Links and Children's Activities

John Holt is a pioneer in the home-schooling field (pre-1977!) and has a multitude of online resources as well as published books. You can view his website here.

For school supplies (pens, paper, printers, etc.) check this site out - Stacks and Stacks. Order online with fast shipping! No need to drive to town.

If your child is of the age to spend time alone online I cannot stress enough the need for internet monitoring software. Too often children happen upon adult sites and chat rooms - a scary proposition considering the possible consequences. I have heard that Dateline addresses this very issue every week but I can't help but wish that more parents would take notice of what their child is doing online and on which site.

I've often thought of running a talk across country on my own and calling it STOP (Small Town Online Predators) because I believe that those of us in small towns are of the sad belief that 'it can't happen here, to us' - yet it does. Watch your children, walk them to the bus stop every morning, and teach them about online safety.

GoodbyeCityLife has set up a site of recommended children's activities - these resources range from paper crafts to magic tricks and are generally in the $10-20 range. My personal favorite is the DIY gift boxes, don't let the name fool you, these paper templates (you print as often as you like) have many uses -- pinatas, mobiles, etc. Jump over to DIY to see what I mean...

Since we are discussing quality computer time, here's another inexpensive resource for educational computer games
