Fly fishing can be a great way to get fresh air and exercise, plus a little quiet time.

To go fly fishing is somewhat different than using worms or live bait. You’ll also need to be well stacked with patience. For the best results, learn what the fish are feeding on, and purchase or use a fishing fly that most resembles the snack of your prey.

Aside from believable (to the fish) flies, having a good quality lightweight graphite rod and the right reel are the most important pieces of equipment in fly fishing.

I like to go fish in deep, calm pools where salmon and trout are apt to be wallowing, but other friends enjoy fishing in fast moving streams. A good tip to remember is not to cast your shadow whereever you fish from as it will discourage bites from spooked fish. Fish are neither blind nor stupid – they will know something is up if the shadows change, noises or splashing are occuring nearby.

So, whether you are wading down a shallow stream or fly fishing from a boat, try different techniques to see what it will take to catch the big one. Your line into fast-moving waters will attract fish such as salmon and trout like staying in swift water where oxygen is plenty. Other techniques to try are to use a wet fly. If you’re using a fly that the fish is interested in taking hold of, you could be in for a good fight. A dry fly floats on top of the water, so a fish will have to rise up for it. These are called roles for the fly.
