Country Saltbox Houses

I’ve been painting them for years. Filled my old farmhouse with prints of them saying “Home Sweet Home” and such. I even had a small but pretty collection of 2-3″ high lit saltbox houses – but that was before the fire…

Still, I can’t believe I’ve been writing about country decorating on this site for nearly 10 years and somehow I’ve neglected to mention the sweet and simple saltbox.

The saltbox styled house was one of the easiest frames to build in the early days. Once mills started up in North America and wood was converted from logs to lumber, people started putting up taller houses of simplistic construction. Of course they didn’t seem simple back then.

This primitive country painting of a weathered white saltbox house is certainly one of my favorite prints. At less than $10, it's a steal too!

Today the old-styled house is revered as a farmhouse – hundreds of mornings of little hands holding that 200 year old banister, coming down for breakfast. Folk art painters revere these houses as well since they are easy to paint on a landscape and match the primitive styles of artists so long ago.

Today you’ll find plenty of these houses in a wide variety of heritage colors. Muted green, washed out navy, sun-kissed gold and, the old standby, weathered white.
