Favorite Books on Life in the Country

in Animals on the Farm

For years on this website and in my personal life I have been recommending the same books, even though I've read many others. Why? Because these books are timeless, helpful, and cover a wide range of country living topics.

There's really not much to say - that you won't find on Amazon's sales pages or in the book reviews that people leave. Other than these do have my highest recommendations.

Carla Emery's "New Encyclopedia of Country Living." A really handy book to have around whether you live in the city or the country!

A favorite that is forever passed between my inlaws house and my own - and they are a third generation farming family! I had an older version of this book which for some reason I gave away, and now can't even remember who I gave it to! They must have needed it...The book is a fun read that is valuable and helpful - even in the city! Recipes, how-to, gardening, first aid and more.  More Info

"Back to Basics. How to Learn and Enjoy Traditional American Skills." Another handy reference, well-organized and written. Not just for Americans!

Covers all aspects of country living. This book has been around for ages and is in it's 4th printing I believe. After all, who can go wrong with a Reader's Digest book?  More Info

Newer Country Living Books on the Shelf (also adored)

See my favorite Country Decorating Books - great on those cold, winter nights when you need a little escape or inspiration! Both old and used are available. And many now include free shipping and fast delivery!
